Vacationing in Maui can be expensive especially if you like to stay at nice properties. Our trip back in March started in Honolulu which was a nice start to get over the jet lag by our eyes were set on Maui.
I had been researching properties to book with points. The Wailea Beach Resort caught my eye given that it is a Marriott property and being the SPG point hungry guy that I am, I did not hesitate to book a 5 night stay.
Booking Wailea Beach Resort with SPG
A cash booking would run you $440 a night for a total of $2570.02 for a 5 night stay.
Obviously we don’t use cash around here 😉
SPG points can be transferred to Marriott at a generous rate of 1:3. Wailea beach resort costs 40,000 Marriott point/night. Given that a Marriott redemption allows you to book the fifth night for free, I only needed 160,000 Marriott points, or 53,333 points. (54,000 points since you can transfer in increments of 1000). SPG is currently offering a sign up bonus of 25,000 by applying for the SPG American Express card
I generated the 54,000 points by manufactured spending on my SPG personal card. The cost to generate points came out to $464.40!
Not a bad discount for a gorgeous property in paradise.
We got upgraded to a pool view king room. The staff was very accommodating and generally helpful. We did have to pay a $30/night resort fee (no way out of that even if it’s an award redemption)
How long did take you to generate the necessary SPG points?
I get this question a lot from people trying to gauge whether the savings are worth the time and effort. My answer is always the following: this is a hobby and it’s up to you figure that out. It took me five trips to the mall/Walmart for a total of five hours.
